Thank you to Sarah and Steven for sharing your positive Ventouse birth (suction cup) using Tens and pethidine.
‘Hi Emily.
Hope you are well. We just wanted to let you know that we had a gorgeous baby girl on the 19th of July called Lucy Betty. I went into labour naturally at 40+4 days. I had very strong, close contractions from the start at 2am and on arriving at Poole at 5am I was only 3cm but got to 8cm in an hour! After some pethidine and two hours of pushing with midwife support, it was decided I needed to go to central delivery as she wasn’t making enough progress. She needed some assistance from a ventouse and a paediatrician (baby doctor) to give her a rub and some oxygen.
After a night in hospital we headed home and have been enjoying getting to know our little Lucy and all the challenges that newborns bring! Your classes helped us understand the whole labour process (I even hired and used a tens machine which I wouldn’t have entertained before).
And even though we ended up needing some intervention we understood why and felt more comfortable with the terminology and how everything unfolded.
Thank you so much!
Love from, Sarah and Steven’
Talking Babies Takes a Closer Look:
‘She needed some assistance from a ventouse and a paediatrician to give her a rub and some oxygen.’
When a mother chooses to receive pethidine for pain relief in labour sometimes her baby is born very relaxed. This is because the drug pethidine crosses the placenta to the baby.
In response to Lucy (the baby) being very relaxed at birth the paediatrician gave her a thorough dry and a rub to help stimulate her to wake up and take a nice deep breath. This and a little bit of Oxygen is all that was needed.
During a Talking Babies Antenatal class we discuss Pethidine and a positive ventouse birth. If you would like to know more please join us on one of the available courses.
